Sustainability
We firmly believe that business must be conducted sustainably
Responsible and sustainable management that generates income and profit is now a conditio sine qua non – without it, one cannot truly speak of a business. What matters, however, is not only the economic result itself, but also how that result has been achieved.
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
(from the Brundtland Report, 1987)
To this end, we have initiated a process to assess and manage Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks based on three key pillars – responsible management, environmental protection and care for people.
In particular, to protect the environment and achieve the carbon neutrality targets set out in the European Union’s Green Deal, we have launched a program structured around three main directions – the use of sustainable raw materials, energy efficiency, and the management of emissions and waste.
What we have achieved
Sustainable raw materials
- All our strategic suppliers represent global best practices in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance); our main paper supplier, The Navigator Company, applies circular economy principles, while our machinery supplier, Heidelberg, manufactures CO2-neutral equipment;
- we are FSC®-C105436 (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, as are our suppliers;
- the use of paper sourced from sustainably managed forests has increased to 85% of all paper used by the company;
- our inks are water-based, odourless and free from SVHC substances, mineral oils, aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) and saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH), with their use now accounting for 70% of the total inks used.
Energy efficiency
- We have invested €8 million in new printing machinery with improved energy efficiency and have reduced energy consumption by 15% compared with 2021;
- we also generate clean energy from our photovoltaic plant in Borgoricco, covering 16% of our total energy requirements. We have further expanded our green energy capacity by installing a photovoltaic system at our Resana facility.
Responsible waste management
- we have reduced SCOPE 1 emissions by 8% overall;
- we have increased the proportion of recyclable waste to 93%, and non-hazardous waste to 95%;
- thanks to reusable ink drums and a supply system that feeds them directly to the presses, we have avoided waste equivalent to 5,120 aluminium cans in a single year;
- filtered water dispensers installed across all company areas have eliminated waste equivalent to 40,000 plastic bottles per year;
- through reusable transport containers, we have avoided the use of 30,000 cardboard boxes over the last five years;
- we also provide ongoing training for our operators on proper waste management – including separating white paper from printed paper to optimise recycling and analysing waste from new printing equipment to identify the most appropriate toner disposal methods.
What still needs to be done
Environmental responsibility never stops and goes hand in hand with our commitment to product quality. That's why, building on the results achieved thus far, we have set new objectives across the three areas identified:
- Decarbonisation – we are working to identify initiatives by 2026 to reduce CO2 emissions, taking into account regulatory, economic, technological and market contexts, and assessing the impact of each initiative based on the actions implemented;
- Increasing renewable electricity – by 2030 we aim to reach 40% of electricity consumption from certified renewable sources, both self-generated and purchased;
- Mapping emissions – our technical teams are developing a carbon footprint management model that will allow us to collect and calculate Scope 3 data by 2026.
